Catechetical Institute

Official Partnership

In January 2019, Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama entered our diocese into official partnership with the Franciscan University Catechetical Institute.

On July 29, 2019, the Office of Evangelization and Discipleship (OED) officially launched this partnership with Mentorship Formation days in Raleigh and Wilmington, led by Dr. William Keimig, the Assistant Director of the Catechetical Institute.

The Catechetical Institute is an amazing tool for parish leaders to get their catechists and ministry volunteers officially certified on a diocesan level or to simply provide them with excellent practical formation for ministry. It is not the only method of formation and certification endorsed by the diocese, but one tool among many to serve our parishes.

What formation tracks does the Diocese of Raleigh have?

Currently the Diocese of Raleigh has indicated four tracks on our landing page that we would like to promote. Three of these tracks (Basic Catechist, Youth Ministry, RCIA) lead to official diocesan certification. The other track (Mentorship Training) is to form mentors for service in your parish and to help in the Catechetical Institute’s process.

See the tracks.

Get more information on certification.

How much does it cost?

The Catechetical institute costs a parish $300 per year. For that one-time payment, the parish can register as many participants as it wishes and use as many of the formation opportunities it wishes.

The OED is committed to providing excellent formation opportunities to parishes that have lesser resources. We have thus created a grant for small and rural parishes to receive full funding for membership in the Catechetical Institute. Apply for this grant.

How does a parish register?

The process takes about 3-5 minutes. Just visit our diocesan landing page and click the parish registration icon at the bottom of the page. Fill in the basic information, pay the fee and your parish is ready to go!

How does an individual register?

There are two ways that you can register:

  1. If your parish is already registered as a member, you can register individually for free! Just visit our diocesan landing page and click the registration button at the bottom right of the page.
  2. If your parish is not registered, you can register individually; sign up at the bottom of the page. Also, be sure to encourage your parish to officially register.

What implementation resources for a parish are available?

Check out this Catechetical Institute Leaders Guide (PDF) for assistance with initiation, mentorship preparation, onboarding the parish and continuation of the Catechetical Institute in your parish.

To further help parish leaders implement the Catechetical Institute formation into their parish, we will be holding a formation workshop in four different areas of the diocese in January. For more information or to register, please visit our calendar.

Are there any resources for parish promotion?

Two flyers have been made to promote Franciscan at Home in your community:

  1. Parish Bulletin Flyer (PDF) can be used as a bulletin insert to encourage all parishioners to sign up for a workshop
  2. Parishioner Sign Up Flyer (PDF) can be used as a second side to the Parish Bulletin Flyer or be used to pass out individually

To get started on an individual or parish level, visit our diocesan landing page.
